Done! Obama signs bill extending, creating Tax Credits

President Obama signed bill  H.R. 3548, extending unemployment benefits for all states and extending the $8,000 Tax Credit for first home buyers. The bill also creates a $6,500 tax credit for those home buyers who have owned their current primary residence for at least 5 years.  See ‘Housing Tax Credits’ for more details. Remember: The $6,500 tax credit took effect when the President signed the bill.

Senate agrees to extend, expand Housing Tax Credit

Senate Democrats reached a much sought-after agreement to extend the $8,000 tax credit for first time home buyers. Their plan would also extend the tax credit to those buyers who have owned their current residence for at least five years (these buyers would receive a $6,500 tax credit).

Under the new agreement, the tax credit will be available to those individuals earning up to $125,000, and up to $250,000 for couples. The previous guidelines capped income at $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples. More details are to be worked out.

Senate debating $8,000 Tax Credit extension

Senate majority leader Harry Reid wants the $8,000 tax credit extended through March 31st. The Democrat’s plan calls for a $2,000 reduction in value for each of the subsequent quarters of 2010.
